Taiko drumming will play an essential part in my short film and its soundtrack, as on festivals there are live taiko street performances, which for me were some of the most impressive parts. It is an unforgetable experience seeing the power and strength of the drummers and feeling the sound in your whole body. I hope to convey this energy in my animation.
For designing the taiko drummers, who will represent the cows of the legend about tanabata, I first made some sketches of realistic cows to get used to the shapes and body parts and structure. I then made a first design of a drummer in cow costume. My first try looks quite crappy, but it has the features which I want to include. I tried to draw the taiko dressing from memory so I won't get too influenced and fixed on their actual clothing look. They have a sort of ribbon on their head which I used to represent the horns. Only after designing all the characters I had a look at my reference photos.
Here are some reference pictures of taiko drummers I took on festivals in Hiratsuka and Hachioji.
