Final changes on One Sheet

I made some final changes on the one sheet which is also on the front cover for the DVD case:
  • Hikoboshi and Orihime as characters came into existence rather late during the production phase. However they now play quite an important role in the film, as they retell the story of the legend of Tanabata. The legend says on Tanabata a crowd of magpies comes to form a bridge for the lovers over the river/milky way. Therefore I arranged Orihime and Hikoboshi opposite to each other on the two major decoration gates, and linked them with a half circle of magpies.
  • Furthermore I exchanged the background gates through new, more carefully selected gates which I build at later stages.
  • I also changed the font of the title. Originally the writing of Tanabata on the one sheet was in bold captial letters, which were very easy to read. However my intro the Hiragana version of Tanabata transforms into Roman lowercase letters, so the previous one sheet font was basically obsolete in the film. Although the writing as it is now may not be that easy to read as the one before, however the exchange was necessary to keep consistency in the design.

Last mixed BG

These two backgroungs will appear in the ending scenes, though at night time. They are extremely large as there will be huge camera pans and zooms in them.
I built them from various layers and elements of all the different other festival backgrounds.

The Locals - SC 02 SQ 05

Originally I planned to have one local guy in every day clothing passing by. I exchanged him through 3 locals in yukata (Japanese light version of a kimono). On festivals in Japan many people dress up in colourful yukata, with flowery patterns, little handbags and round fans. Due to the frame size and composition not all of the details can be seen in actual film, therefore I would like to present them here. I really like the red fish-hadbag of the girl in the middle.

Painted Fireworks

The whole time during the production I was wondering if I really should let the film end with hanabi (fireworks), as I have drawn or painted fireworks ever before, because I always thought it looks too difficult. So I had no idea how to do it, until I spontaneously decided to give it a try today. I painted all the frames without presketching directly into photoshop.
Considering that I was absolutely clueless before, I am positively surprised about the results.
